Level 3: The Marriage of Yin and Yang
坎離交媾 · kan li jiao gou
Draw yang qi and fuse it with the stored yin. The body becomes bipolar — and electrical.
Description
Levels 1 and 2 are one-handed: they deal only with yin. Level 3 introduces the other pole. The practitioner draws yang qi — described as coming from above, from Heaven, in contrast to the yin drawn from earth and body — and unites it with the accumulated yin in the dan tien.
This is the classical kan-li operation of Taoist internal alchemy (the trigrams Water and Fire, "stealing the yang from within the yin"), but Mo Pai describes its result in unusually physical terms. The union is characterised as something like the completion of a circuit or the charging of a battery: two opposite poles now exist in the same vessel, and the potential between them expresses itself as literal electricity.
This is where "Dynamo Jack" comes from. From level 3, a practitioner is said to be able to shock another person on contact — not a metaphorical jolt but a sensation witnesses consistently described as an electric shock, ranging from a static prickle to something that knocked people off their feet.
Practice
- The method for drawing yang is the part of the curriculum most closely held. The leaked sheets are thinnest here, and the published books deliberately withhold specifics. What is consistently described is a change of orientation: attention that was entirely downward and inward now also opens upward.
- The fusion is described as requiring a full and stable level 2 — an insufficient yin store is said to make the union impossible or unstable.
- After fusion, practice becomes as much about management as accumulation: the charge must be maintained, and it depletes with use.
Signs and effects
- The event itself, described by more than one account as a discharge, flash, or internal shock — sudden rather than gradual.
- Electrical effects: shocking others on contact, unintended discharges to metal, interference with small electronics (claimed, frequently, and never measured under controlled conditions).
- A qualitative change in the felt nature of the stored energy — the sources stop calling it heavy and start calling it live.
- Substantially increased physical capacity and reduced need for sleep, per student accounts.
How it is tested
Self-evident in the lineage's framing: the student can shock the teacher, and the teacher can feel the bipolarity directly. This is the first level whose attainment is externally visible to a third party.
Obstacles
- Instability of the union, requiring the whole operation to be repeated.
- Ego. Every account of this level notes that it is the point where students start performing party tricks, and that performing spends the charge that took years to build.
- The hard ethical turn: from here the practitioner can injure people accidentally. The lineage's conduct rules stop being advice and start being conditions.
Notes
- Accounts of instrumented measurement circulate in the literature — voltmeters, a Japanese television crew, assorted researchers who came to watch. The readings reported by those accounts are described in The Demonstrations.
