Level 4: Projection

Send the fused qi outside the body. Every filmed demonstration John Chang ever gave lives here.

Description

At level 4 the bipolar qi is no longer confined to the body. It can be projected — into another person, into an object, into empty air. This is the level that made Mo Pai famous, and understanding its position in the system is the key to understanding the whole subject.

Level 4 is the fourth rung of seventy-two. In the lineage's own accounting, the pyrokinesis, the electric shocks, the telekinesis, the healing, the needleless acupuncture — the entire catalogue of astonishing demonstrations that brings almost everyone to this topic — represents early work. Roughly five percent of the path. Chang is repeatedly quoted as being impatient with visitors who wanted to see tricks, precisely because the tricks were, from inside the system, remedial.

It is also the level at which the demonstrations are expensive. Projecting qi spends the store. Chang is described as needing days to recover from a session of demonstrations, and as resenting the cost.
